Extreme Hurricane Warning – Prepare Now for Catastrophic Winds, Flooding, Landslides and Life-Threatening Storm Surge

Area

Jamaica

Event description

Category 5 Hurricane Melissa is expected to move near or over Jamaica tonight and Tuesday, bringing potentially catastrophic and life-threatening conditions. Maximum sustained winds are near 260 km/h (160 mph) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm conditions are expected to spread across Jamaica today, with hurricane conditions beginning tonight or early Tuesday. Rainfall totals of 350–750 mm (15–30 inches) are expected over parts of Jamaica during the next couple of days, especially across central and eastern parishes, with higher amounts possible over hilly terrain. Catastrophic flash flooding and landslides are likely. Roads and communities may become flooded or isolated, particularly in low-lying, flood-prone and mountainous areas. A life-threatening storm surge with large and destructive waves is likely along the south coast of Jamaica tonight and Tuesday. Water levels could reach 9–13 feet above ground level near and east of where the centre of Melissa makes landfall.

Instructions

Complete preparations immediately. Do not wait for conditions to deteriorate. Follow all evacuation instructions from emergency authorities immediately, particularly if you are in a coastal, flood-prone, low-lying or landslide-prone area. Move to a designated shelter or other safe location if instructed by authorities. Secure your home and loose outdoor objects and ensure emergency supplies, medications, drinking water and essential documents are readily available. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges or fast-moving water. Stay away from beaches, shorelines and other coastal areas threatened by storm surge and destructive waves. During hurricane conditions, remain inside a secure building and stay away from windows and doors. Small craft operators and fishers, including those on the cays and banks, should remain in safe harbour until all warnings have been lifted and wind and sea conditions have returned to normal. Continue to monitor official information from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and national emergency authorities and be prepared to act immediately on further instructions.
